Businessman Duped of Rs 2 Lakh in Insurance Fraud Call; Ghatkopar Police Launch Probe

Mumbai, 18th June 2025: A Ghatkopar-based businessman was allegedly duped of ₹2.03 lakh by a fraudster posing as a representative from an insurance company, under the pretext of offering a premium discount. A case has been registered at the Ghatkopar police station, and an investigation is underway.
The victim, identified as Rajesh Tiwari, a resident of the Ghatkopar area, has been holding a policy with a private insurance firm for several years and has consistently paid his premiums. Two days ago, Tiwari received a phone call from a man claiming to be an executive from his insurance company.
The caller informed Tiwari that his current year’s premium installment was due and offered a “discount” if the payment was made immediately. Trusting the caller, Tiwari transferred ₹2.03 lakh to the bank account provided during the call.
However, after making the payment, Tiwari cross-checked the status of his insurance policy online and found that the premium had not been credited. He then contacted the official customer care of the insurance company and was informed that no such communication had been made from their end, confirming that he had been scammed.
Realising he had fallen victim to a cyber fraud, Tiwari approached the Ghatkopar police and lodged a formal complaint. A case has since been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act. Police officials said efforts are underway to trace the accused through the bank account details and phone number used during the fraud.
Authorities have urged citizens to verify calls and emails claiming to be from financial institutions and avoid making direct payments without cross-checking through official channels.
