Central Railway Rolls Out First EMU Rake with Renovated Compartment for Senior Citizens

Mumbai, 05th July 2025: Central Railway has introduced its first Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) rake with a specially renovated compartment dedicated to senior citizens in the Mumbai suburban network. The initiative, aimed at improving travel comfort and accessibility for elderly passengers, was executed by the Matunga Workshop in response to directives from the Railway Board.

The modification involved converting a middle luggage compartment in the sixth coach from the Mumbai end into a senior citizen-only section. This upgrade is intended to ease the challenges faced by older commuters while boarding and deboarding suburban trains, particularly during peak hours.

Key Features of the Renovated Compartment:

Enhanced Seating Configuration: The compartment features three 3-seater benches and two 2-seater units, offering a total seating capacity of 13.

Stainless Steel Tubular Partitions: New partitions include sight-level panels and integrated grab poles for improved visibility and support.

Safety Enhancements: Knurled vertical grab poles at doorway footboards and emergency ladders beneath both door frames have been installed to improve safety.

Aesthetic Upgrades: The interior has been vinyl wrapped to enhance the overall visual appeal and ambience.

With the rollout of this prototype, Central Railway has commenced the process of converting additional EMU rakes to include similar compartments for senior citizens.

The new rake reflects an infrastructure upgrade focused on inclusive mobility within the suburban rail system.
