Concerns Over Health Of Citizens Arise As Thane Residents Plagued By Contaminated Water Supplies Amid Heavy Rains

Thane, 1st July 2023: Several areas in Naupada, Kopri, Gandhinagar, Hazuri, and Louiswadi are facing an alarming issue as the water supply has been contaminated, emitting a pungent smell and posing health risks to the citizens. The municipal administration, attributing the muddy water supply to heavy rainfall in the dam area, has appealed to residents to boil and filter the water before drinking.

585 million litres of water are supplied daily in the Thane municipal area through four sources. In this, 250 million litres of water are supplied from the Municipal Corporation’s own scheme, 115 million litres from the STEM Authority, 135 million litres from the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation, and 85 million litres from the Mumbai Municipal Corporation. Therefore, all these sources are considered important from the point of view of water supply in the city.

The affected regions, receiving water supply from the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, have been grappling with the issue of muddy water for the past few days. The contaminated water not only appears contaminated but also has an unpleasant odour, jeopardising the health of residents. Citizens are expressing their concerns and criticising the municipality’s administration for the deteriorating water quality.

In response, the Water Department of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation has issued a notification explaining that the excessive rainfall in the dam area, which serves as a water source for the city, has caused the influx of muddy water into the water channels. The water is currently being purified at the Pise Panjrapur water treatment plant. However, due to the severity of the situation, the Thane Municipal Corporation has appealed to residents to take precautionary measures by filtering and boiling the water before consumption.
