Environmental Concerns in Thane: NCP Activists Protest Against Garbage Dumping in Bhiwandi Creek

Thane, 12th December 2023: The Bhiwandi creek along the Mumbai-Nashik highway has become a focal point of environmental concerns as it is being filled with garbage, prompting activists from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), led by Jitendra Awhad, to take a stand against the unauthorized dumping. Activists reportedly took action by breaking the windows and deflating the wheels of the vehicles carrying the garbage.

NCP leader, Jitendra Awhad, has criticized the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) administration for its role in allowing the unchecked disposal of waste along the Bhiwandi creek. The garbage dumping, allegedly taking place on private property without proper authorization, has led to a foul stench permeating the city, contributing to air pollution.

Expressing his concern on social media, Awhad highlighted the adverse impact of the garbage dumping on the local environment. He emphasized that migratory birds, which usually visit the area during winter, have become scarce due to the pollution of creek water.

Despite protests and criticism, the Thane Municipal Corporation administration has been accused of neglecting the issue. Awhad called on the residents of Thane to join the protest and take to the streets to voice their concerns. He questioned the administration’s failure to establish an independent garbage dump even after 40 years, raising concerns about the long-term environmental consequences.

On Monday, efforts were reportedly made to clear the garbage from the creek using workers. However, the NCP activists have declared their intention to continue protesting until a sustainable solution is implemented.
