First-Floor Gallery Collapse in Thane Housing Society Forces Evacuation of Seven Families

Thane, 22nd July 2024: On Monday, a section of the first-floor gallery of a 60-year-old building in Thane city collapsed during heavy rainfall, leading authorities to evacuate all seven families living there. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

The collapse occurred around 12:40 pm at the Sankalp Housing Society in the Naupada area. The two-storey structure, which housed seven families, had previously been classified as “C2B,” indicating that it required significant repairs but was not deemed immediately unsafe. Following the collapse, the building has been declared highly unsafe by civic officials.

Thane Municipal Corporation’s regional disaster management cell chief, Yasin Tadvi, confirmed that all residents were safely evacuated and relocated to temporary accommodations. Efforts are now focused on vacating the shops on the ground floor, with their water and electricity supplies already disconnected.

The encroachment department is actively working to remove the unsafe portion of the gallery. A security cordon has been set up around the building to prevent access and ensure safety, prohibiting both residents and shopkeepers from entering the premises.
