Heavy Rain Triggers Rising River Levels in Thane District, Alert Issued

Thane, 20th July 2023: Since Tuesday, Thane district has been experiencing continuous heavy rainfall, leading to a significant increase in the water levels of various rivers in the region. As of Wednesday morning, the Ulhas river has reached a level of 15.60 meters, prompting concerns about potential flooding in nearby villages.
The danger level for the Ulhas river is marked at 16.50 meters, and it is essential to closely monitor the situation as the rainfall persists. At the same time, the Kalu River has already reached the danger level, with its water level recorded at 102.20 meters. Residents of villages situated along the riverbanks have been put on alert as there is a possibility of rapid rise in river levels if the rain continues unabated.
While the monsoon arrived late this year, it has now picked up pace, with the Indian Meteorological Department predicting heavy rains in Thane district and surrounding areas for the next two days.
The intensity of the rainfall has increased, affecting both urban and rural areas of Thane district. Rivers and natural streams in the region have begun to overflow due to the continuous downpour.
According to the District Information Office, the Ulhas river’s water level has risen significantly over the past 24 hours. As of Wednesday morning, the river level in Badlapur was reported at 15.60 meters, close to the alert level of 16.60 meters and below the danger level of 17.50 meters.
However, the levels at Jambhul and Mohan have reached the warning levels of 8 and 12.50 meters, respectively, and any further increase could lead to danger in those areas. The rural regions of Badlapur and Kalyan talukas have already been impacted by floods, prompting authorities to issue alert warnings.
Additionally, the Kalu River near Titwala Dam is flowing at a warning level, recorded at 102.20 meters. The danger alert level for the Kalu river is 103.50 meters, raising concerns of potential flooding if the rainfall persists.
With the possibility of heavy rain in Neral, Matheran, and Karjat areas of Raigad district, authorities are closely monitoring the situation as it may contribute to further rises in the Ulhas river’s water level.
Residents in the affected regions are advised to stay vigilant and follow instructions from local authorities to ensure their safety during this period of increased rainfall and rising river levels.
