Man Jumps to Death from Mumbai’s Atal Setu, Body Yet to Be Recovered, Say Police
Mumbai, 1st October 2024: A man has died by suicide after jumping from the Atal Setu in Mumbai, which connects the city to Navi Mumbai, according to the police. The body has not yet been recovered from the sea, officials stated.
The incident occurred around 10 a.m. today when a red Maruti Brezza car was stopped, and a man jumped from the bridge, as seen in CCTV footage accessed by the police. The man’s identity is yet to be confirmed.
The Atal Setu, inaugurated in January, is the longest sea bridge in India, spanning over 8 kilometres to link Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. Several incidents of attempted suicide have taken place on the bridge since its opening.
In August, a woman attempted to jump off the Atal Setu but was saved by a cab driver and police officers. CCTV footage captured the dramatic rescue, showing them pulling the woman to safety just in time. In the video, she was initially seen sitting on the safety barrier, throwing something into the sea before trying to jump.
In July, a Tata Nexon was stopped on the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, and a 38-year-old man exited the vehicle, climbed over the railing, and jumped to his death.
Only three months after the bridge’s inauguration, a 43-year-old doctor also jumped off, leaving behind a suicide note addressed to her father.
