MNS Activists Slap Shopkeeper In Mumbai Over Language Dispute With Marathi Woman

Mumbai, 6th December 2024: In an unexpected incident in South Mumbai’s Girgaon area, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists confronted and slapped a shopkeeper following a complaint from a Marathi-speaking woman. The woman alleged that the shopkeeper had asked her to converse in Marwadi instead of Marathi, citing the growing influence of the BJP in the state.

According to the police, the incident took place on Monday in Khetwadi, Girgaon. A video on social media shows the shopkeeper apologizing to the woman in the presence of MNS activists after being slapped.

In the footage, the woman claims that the shopkeeper told her to speak in Marwadi, stating, “The BJP has come to power, so you should talk in Marwadi and not Marathi. Mumbai BJP ka, Mumbai Marwadi ka.” She mentioned approaching a BJP leader from her constituency about the matter but was advised not to escalate tensions between communities.

Unsatisfied with the response, she approached MNS representatives in the Malabar Hill area. Subsequently, the shopkeeper was summoned to the MNS office, where he was reprimanded, slapped, and made to apologize to the woman. As per police reports, the matter was resolved after the shopkeeper extended his apology to both the woman and the Marathi-speaking community.
