Mobile Phone Call While Driving Turns Fatal: Woman Arrested After SUV Runs Over 8-Year-Old Boy in Mumbai

Mumbai, 31st August 2026: An eight-year-old boy died after allegedly being run over by a Toyota Innova Crysta in Mumbai’s Bandra area on Sunday afternoon. The woman driving the vehicle was allegedly talking on her mobile phone at the time of the accident, police said. She has been arrested in connection with the case.

The tragic incident took place between 2 pm and 2:30 pm outside Mehboob Studio in Bandra. The victim, identified as Ansh Ravindra Gupta, sustained critical injuries after the vehicle allegedly ran over him.

According to police and eyewitness accounts, the child was playing in the area and was attempting to cross the road when the Innova allegedly hit him. The vehicle’s wheel reportedly passed over his chest, leaving him critically injured.

Ansh was immediately rushed to Holy Family Hospital for treatment. However, doctors declared him dead upon arrival.

The accused, identified as 45-year-old Megha Rawal, was driving the Innova Crysta at the time of the incident. Police said preliminary investigations and eyewitness statements indicate that she was allegedly speaking on her mobile phone while driving, which may have resulted in her losing control of the vehicle.

Rawal, a nutritionist and health coach based in Bandra, was subsequently arrested by the police.

A case has been registered against her under Sections 105, 281 and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Police said they are examining eyewitness accounts and other evidence as part of the ongoing investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.

The death of the young boy has left his family devastated, while the incident has once again raised serious concerns about distracted driving and the dangers of using mobile phones while operating vehicles.
