Mumbai: Cable-Stayed Bridge to Replace Ghatkopar ROB by 2027, Aims to Ease Andheri-Ghatkopar Traffic

Mumbai, 1st August 2025: Travel between Andheri and Ghatkopar is expected to become significantly smoother over the next two years, as work progresses on a new cable-stayed bridge connecting Ghatkopar East and West. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) are jointly executing the project, which will pass over the congested Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Marg.

The new bridge replaces a 45-year-old Railway Over Bridge (ROB) that was deemed structurally unfit in 2018 following a civic audit. The ROB was subsequently closed, and plans for a modern, six-lane, 216-metre-long and 11-metre-wide cable-stayed structure were approved.

Once complete, this will be the first cable-stayed ROB operational in the Mumbai suburbs. Currently, Mumbai features such bridges at the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and Reay Road, while a cable-stayed design also supports the Metro One stations at Andheri and Western Express Highway (WEH).

The Ghatkopar bridge is being constructed in two phases to maintain traffic flow during the build. One arm of the existing ROB is being dismantled and rebuilt first, while the second arm continues to operate. The reverse will follow in the next phase.

With an estimated cost of ₹350 crore, the project is scheduled for completion by 2027. According to an MRIDC spokesperson, the bridge will not only improve vehicular movement and reduce traffic congestion on LBS Marg, but will also include pedestrian pathways, service roads, and aesthetic lighting to enhance visual appeal and functionality.
