Mumbai: Car Falls into Road Work Pit in Goregaon; Contractor to be Fined

Mumbai, 10th May 2025: A car plunged into a pit dug for road concretisation near Krishna Leela Society in Bangur Nagar, Goregaon, around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, prompting the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to announce a fine against the contractor for failing to implement basic safety measures.

According to BMC officials, the pit was left unbarricaded, violating standard safety protocols. The incident occurred after sudden heavy rain caused workers to temporarily vacate the site. A vehicle, unaware of the ongoing work and lacking visible warnings or barriers, drove into the unmarked pit while attempting a right turn.

“The accident happened because the contractor had not erected safety barricades around the pit. The area wasn’t visibly marked, and with workers having stepped away due to rain, there was no one to guide or warn drivers,” a BMC engineer explained.

The car was later retrieved using a JCB machine. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar stated that the BMC would fine the contractor responsible for the lapse. “Contractors have been repeatedly instructed to erect barricades and safety signs during road works. This negligence could have caused a serious tragedy,” Bangar said.

Mumbai is currently undergoing extensive road concretisation, with numerous active sites across the city. The BMC has issued repeated warnings to contractors to follow safety norms strictly, but non-compliance continues to be a major concern.

This incident has once again highlighted the risks posed by poorly managed infrastructure work in densely populated urban areas and the urgent need for accountability in civic projects.
