Mumbai: Commuters Allege Autorickshaw Overcharging, Demand Action Against ‘Rickshaw Mafia’

Mumbai, 3rd August 2026: Daily commuters and visitors using Metro stations near the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) have alleged that autorickshaw drivers are routinely refusing to operate on meters and instead demanding inflated fares, sparking fresh concerns over passenger harassment in one of Mumbai’s busiest business districts.

According to commuters, groups of autorickshaw drivers stationed outside Metro exits, particularly near JioWorld BKC, allegedly function in an organised manner by charging fixed fares far higher than the metered rate. A journey that would normally cost between ₹40 and ₹60 is reportedly being charged at ₹150 or more, especially during peak office hours.

Passengers claim that those who question the fares or insist on using the meter are often met with intimidation, arguments, or long delays in finding another autorickshaw. Office-goers, senior citizens, and visitors unfamiliar with the area are said to be among the most affected, as they often have little choice but to pay the demanded amount.

The issue has raised concerns about the lack of enforcement against fare violations despite the heavy footfall at BKC, one of Mumbai’s major commercial hubs. Commuters have urged the Regional Transport Office (RTO), Mumbai Traffic Police, and other concerned authorities to conduct regular inspections and take strict action against drivers refusing to operate by the meter.

Residents and daily travellers have also called for increased monitoring around Metro station exits, stricter penalties for offenders, and dedicated enforcement teams to ensure that passengers are charged only the legally prescribed metered fare.

The recurring complaints have renewed demands for immediate intervention by the authorities to curb alleged overcharging and restore confidence among Metro commuters using autorickshaws for last-mile connectivity.
