Mumbai: Construction Begins on Kharghar–Turbhe Link Road Tunnel; One-Year Traffic Diversions Rolled Out

Navi Mumbai, 21st November 2025: The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has initiated construction of the underground tunnel for the Kharghar–Turbhe Link Road (KTLR), a key infrastructure project expected to transform connectivity between Kharghar, Belapur and Turbhe.

Spanning 1.763 km, the tunnel is designed to slash the current 40-minute travel time between Turbhe and Kharghar to nearly 10 minutes, alleviating pressure on the congested Sion–Panvel Highway and offering commuters a faster and more efficient alternative route.

One-Year Traffic Restrictions Announced
With major civil work beginning, the Navi Mumbai Traffic Police have enforced a comprehensive traffic diversion plan that will remain effective for one year, until November 16 next year. Authorities have urged motorists to be patient as the construction progresses.

According to DCP (Traffic) Tirupati Kakade, work will be carried out from the Kharghar Gurudwara stretch up to Juinagar Railway Station, within the jurisdiction of the Turbhe Traffic Unit. The project zone begins roughly 100 metres before the Shiravane bridge on the Sion–Panvel Highway.

A crucial service road—from Sawan Knowledge Park on the Pune-bound carriageway of the highway to Shiravane MIDC and onward to Delta Stellar—will operate as a one-way route for all vehicles except essential services, including police, fire brigade, ambulances and government vehicles.

Road Closures and Alternate Routes

The traffic plan includes several reroutes to manage vehicular movement efficiently:

Vehicles from Uran Phata will be directed towards Turbhe MIDC Road.

Traffic arriving from Nerul’s internal roads will be diverted onto the Sion–Panvel Highway.

Entry from Shiravane village to MIDC will remain fully closed for the entire duration of the project.

Vehicles from Shiravane village will be rerouted towards the Juinagar Railway Station service road.

Commuters traveling from Shiravane village toward Nerul’s LP Bridge will be redirected to the LP Bridge service road.

Traffic from Nerul and Shiravane heading toward Mumbai will be diverted to the Mumbai-bound carriageway of the Sion–Panvel Highway.

Traffic officials have appealed to commuters to follow the revised routes carefully and cooperate with personnel on duty. The diversions, they emphasized, are essential to ensuring safety and maintaining smooth vehicular flow during the tunnel construction phase.
