Mumbai Customs Seizes Over 3 Kg of Gold, iPhones, and USD 118,350 in Foreign Currency in Major Airport Crackdown

Mumbai, March 21, 2024 – In a series of high-stake operations spanning from March 17 to March 20, the Airport Commissionerate under Mumbai Customs Zone-III has successfully dismantled a significant gold smuggling ring at the Mumbai Airport. The meticulous efforts of the customs officials led to the seizure of over 3.02 kilograms of gold, alongside luxury items and foreign currency, cumulatively valued at approximately ₹1.76 crore.

In what unfolded over eight distinct cases, the customs team demonstrated exceptional vigilance and investigative acumen, uncovering ingeniously concealed contraband. The gold, the primary focus of these smuggling attempts, was found hidden in a variety of everyday objects – from toolboxes, the clothing and sandals of passengers (pax), to household items like hand blenders and even toy cars.

The operation not only resulted in the confiscation of precious metals but also led to the seizure of four high-end iPhone devices, further highlighting the diverse nature of smuggling activities through the airport. Moreover, the customs officers intercepted a significant amount of foreign currency, amounting to 118,350 USD, which underscores the international aspect of the smuggling ring they were up against.
