Mumbai: Fake Transgender Person Enters Powai Woman’s Home on Pretext of Removing ‘Evil Eye’, Arrested Within Four Hours
Mumbai, 21st August 2026: A 28-year-old man allegedly disguised as a transgender person and entered a woman’s home in Powai on the pretext of removing an “evil eye” before allegedly sexually assaulting her. The Powai police arrested the accused within four hours after receiving the woman’s complaint.
According to the police, the incident took place on August 18. The accused, identified as Anil Sheshrao Shinde (28), allegedly approached the woman claiming that he could remove the evil eye. After gaining entry into the house, he allegedly went into the woman’s bedroom and sexually assaulted her.
The accused also allegedly threatened the woman with harm if she disclosed the incident or approached the police.
Following the incident, the woman approached the Powai Police Station and lodged a complaint. Based on her complaint, police registered a case under Sections 64(1) and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police launched an investigation and examined CCTV footage from the area. The footage allegedly showed the accused leaving the location in an autorickshaw. Acting on the CCTV evidence and information received from their sources, police traced and arrested Shinde within four hours of the complaint.
The accused was subsequently produced before a court.
Police said the accused is a resident of Kalwa in Thane and allegedly earns money by begging. Investigators also found that he was not a transgender person, but allegedly dressed as one while begging and used the disguise to approach people.
The police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
