Mumbai: Mayor’s Official Bungalow Renovation Cost Crosses Rs 7 Crore, Fresh Rs 2.89 Crore Tender Invited
Mumbai, 5th August 2026: The renovation and upgradation of the official mayoral bungalow in Byculla has sparked fresh political and public debate after the total expenditure approved for the property crossed ₹7 crore.
The controversy comes as Mumbai’s newly elected Mayor, Ritu Tawde, prepares to move into the official residence. According to civic records, approximately ₹75 lakh was initially spent on repair and essential maintenance works. This was followed by the approval of a ₹3.50 crore renovation proposal. Now, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has invited fresh tenders worth ₹2.89 crore for additional infrastructure and development works at the bungalow.
The latest proposed works include installation of acoustic panels, construction and improvement of sewage and stormwater drainage systems, interlocking concrete pavers, and new underground as well as overhead water storage tanks, along with other external infrastructure upgrades.
The official mayoral bungalow, located in Byculla, covers an area of nearly 6,000 square feet. Since Mayor Ritu Tawde assumed office, the cumulative expenditure on repairs, renovation and infrastructure development has reached an estimated ₹7.14 crore. Civic records also indicate that nearly ₹3.40 crore had already been spent on renovation works in April 2026.
The increasing expenditure on the mayor’s official residence has raised questions over the scale of spending, with critics demanding greater transparency and justification for the repeated approvals of renovation projects.
