Mumbai Metro Line 3’s Phase 2A Gets Green Signal from CMRS, Opening Ceremony Expected Soon

Mumbai, 8th May 2025: Mumbai’s Metro Line 3 is set for a major expansion as the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to Acharya Atre Chowk, Worli section (Phase 2A) receives the crucial safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), paving the way for imminent passenger operations. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) is expected to inaugurate this 9.8-kilometre underground stretch within the next few days, with sources indicating that Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis may lead the opening ceremony.

This new section, part of the 33.5-kilometre Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ-Aarey Metro Line 3, will connect key commercial and residential hubs such as Dharavi, Dadar, Siddhivinayak, and Worli, significantly enhancing north-south connectivity and reducing road congestion for thousands of daily commuters. The corridor’s launch will extend operational Metro service from Aarey to Acharya Atre Chowk, leaving only the final segment to Cuffe Parade pending, which is expected to open by July 2025.

The BKC-Acharya Atre Chowk stretch had been delayed due to safety inspections and trial runs, but with all statutory and safety clearances now in place, MMRC anticipates a notable rise in ridership as the Metro reaches denser parts of Mumbai’s island city. The maximum fare for this new extension will be Rs 60, making it an affordable option for commuters travelling between major city nodes.

Once fully operational, Mumbai Metro Line 3 is projected to transform urban mobility by easing traffic congestion, shortening travel times, and providing a reliable rapid transit solution across Mumbai’s busiest corridors. The launch of this section marks a significant milestone in the city’s ongoing metro expansion.
