Mumbai Monorail Set for Comeback with Metro and Local Rail Integration
Mumbai, 5th August 2026: After remaining suspended for nearly ten months, the Mumbai Monorail is preparing to resume operations with a revamped strategy aimed at making the system more useful and accessible for commuters. Instead of restarting services in phases, authorities plan to reopen the entire monorail corridor at once, supported by seamless connectivity with the Mumbai Metro and suburban railway network.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is focusing on improving multimodal connectivity by linking the monorail with Metro Line 2B and the Central Railway at Chembur. Construction of the connector is in its final stages, and officials have decided that monorail services will resume only after this integration is completed, allowing passengers to switch easily between the three transport systems.
The monorail has remained out of service since September 20, 2025. Before operations were suspended, the system carried around 18,000 passengers daily. However, recurring technical issues and relatively low ridership had affected its performance, prompting authorities to redesign its operational strategy.
Officials believe that reopening the complete route, rather than launching services in phases, will provide greater convenience and encourage more commuters to use the network. The integrated transport hub at Chembur is expected to significantly improve last-mile connectivity and reduce travel time for passengers.
Metro Line 2B is already operational between Diamond Garden and Mankhurd, while the Diamond Garden–Chembur section is fully ready and is expected to open shortly. The commencement of metro services to Chembur is expected to accelerate the monorail’s return.
Meanwhile, the monorail has received the mandatory Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) clearance. Authorities are now carrying out final inspections of the technical systems, safety infrastructure, and train performance before passenger operations resume.
The monorail fleet is also set to expand. At present, eight trains are available, with ten additional trains expected to be inducted, increasing the total fleet to 18 trains. The expanded fleet will enable regular operations across the entire corridor.
With improved connectivity, a larger fleet, and full-route operations, MMRDA aims to revive the Mumbai Monorail as an integral part of the city’s public transport network and provide commuters with a more efficient and seamless travel experience.
