One Dead, 30 Injured in Dahi Handi Accidents Across Mumbai

Mumbai, 16th August 2025: The Dahi Handi celebrations in Mumbai turned tragic on Saturday after a 32-year-old Govinda, Jagmohan Shivkiran Chaudhary, lost his life during the festivities in Mankhurd. Chaudhary, a member of the Bal Govind Pathak, fell while tying the rope at Maharashtra Nagar and sustained severe injuries. He was rushed to Shatabdi Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
His sudden death cast a shadow of grief over the otherwise vibrant celebrations.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), at least 30 people were injured in Dahi Handi-related mishaps across the city till 3 pm. The injured were rushed to municipal hospitals for treatment.
Hospital-wise details of injured Govindas:
Cooper Hospital: 18 injured, 12 admitted, 6 discharged
KEM Hospital: 6 injured, 3 admitted, 3 discharged
Nair Hospital: 6 injured, 1 admitted, 5 discharged
Recognizing the recurring injuries during the festival each year, BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani announced that all municipal hospitals would provide free treatment to Govindas injured in Dahi Handi accidents.
“Injured participants should not have to worry about medical expenses. We have directed all civic hospitals to ensure free treatment,” Gagrani said in a statement.
Additionally, hospitals have been instructed to send updates to the civic emergency control room every three hours for effective monitoring. Special medical teams have also been deployed at major Dahi Handi venues across the city.
The BMC’s move aims to ensure timely treatment and better coordination during the high-risk festive celebrations.
