Punjab Mail’s 114-Year Legacy Celebrated at Train Mahotsav in Mumbai
Mumbai, 30th March 2026: Central Railway celebrated the Train Mahotsav of the historic Punjab Mail (Train Nos. 12137/12138) at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai on Monday. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from passengers, railway officials, rail enthusiasts and members of the public, who gathered to celebrate the rich legacy of one of Indian Railways’ most prestigious and historic trains.
Event Highlights
The festivities began an hour before the train’s scheduled departure at 7:35 pm. The Punjab Mail was beautifully decorated with heritage-themed designs and visuals reflecting its historic legacy and cultural significance. An engaging audio-visual presentation tracing the journey of the train captivated the audience and highlighted its pioneering role in the history of Indian Railways.
Showcasing Upgraded Amenities
As part of the Train Mahotsav, the Punjab Mail has undergone significant refurbishment to enhance passenger comfort while preserving its historic charm.
Interior (First AC): Vinyl wrapping in coupes and aisle panels to enhance the premium look and feel.
Exterior Branding: Vinyl wrapping on the First AC–Second AC composite coach and pantry car with heritage-themed visuals.
Cultural Integration: Designs reflecting the train’s 1912 legacy, the Maharashtra–Punjab connection and its association with India’s freedom struggle, featuring visuals of CSMT, Gateway of India and the Golden Temple.
Heritage Images: Waterproof canvas prints installed inside AC coaches to create a museum-like experience.
Passenger Comfort: New curtains provided in all AC coaches.
Hygiene Upgrades: Installation of auto air fresheners, seat cover dispensers, improved bib cocks, soap dispensers, PVC flooring repairs and scraper mats.
Common Areas: Vinyl wrapping in gangways, doorways and lavatories for improved durability.
Signage: Heritage-themed boards installed for uniformity across coaches.
Finishing Touches: Paint touch-ups on fittings for a refined appearance.
Historical Legacy
The Punjab Mail, originally known as the Punjab Limited, is among the oldest trains of Indian Railways and is notably more than 16 years older than the famous Frontier Mail.
Ballard Pier Mole station once served as a major hub for Great Indian Peninsula Railway services, from where the Punjab Mail began its historic journey. The train departed on its maiden run from Ballard Pier Mole on June 1, 1912.
Over the decades, the train has remained a vital link connecting Mumbai with northern India, carrying immense historical and cultural significance.
Heritage Significance
Officials noted that the Punjab Mail is more than just a train; it represents a living legacy that has connected regions, people and histories across generations. With its deep-rooted heritage and continuous upgrades, it symbolises Central Railway’s effort to blend tradition with modern passenger amenities.
Prateek Goswami, General Manager of Central Railway, Hiresh Mina, Divisional Railway Manager of Mumbai Division, and Subodh Kumar Sagar, Principal Chief Mechanical Engineer, along with principal heads of departments, senior officers and staff from the headquarters and Mumbai Division, media persons, rail enthusiasts and passengers, were present at the event.
