Redevelopment of Kamathipura in South Mumbai Gets Green Light

Mumbai, 29th November 2023: The redevelopment of Kamathipura in South Mumbai has received approval from the high-level committee of the Maharashtra state government. The Mumbai Building Repair And Reconstruction Board Transit Camp of MHADA (Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority) will now proceed with appointing a consultant for the detailed project report. Tenders for this purpose are expected to be released within a week.

Kamathipura, known for its dilapidated buildings, is in urgent need of redevelopment. The Maharashtra government has taken the initiative to address this issue, entrusting the responsibility to the Repair and Reconstruction Board of MHADA. A survey was conducted to assess the type and number of constructions, including residential and non-residential blocks. The feasibility report, recently submitted to the High-Level Committee, has received approval in principle.

Under the redevelopment plan, 6,073 residents and 1,342 non-residents will be rehabilitated. Residential residents will be provided with a 500-square-foot house, while non-residential residents will receive a non-residential plot of at least 225 square feet.

The total area of Kamathipura is reported to be 77,945.29 square meters, comprising various structures. The redevelopment plan aims to address the dilapidated condition of buildings and provide improved living conditions. The compensation for landowners has been finalized, specifying the type and number of houses or plots based on the size of the property.

The detailed project report, once submitted, will provide a clearer picture of the redevelopment plan. The decision on whether MHADA will undertake the project or a private developer will be chosen is expected to be made after the report’s submission.
