Somaiya School in Mumbai Terminates Principal Amidst Social Media Controversy

Mumbai, 8th May 2024: The Somaiya School in Mumbai has announced the discontinuation of its principal’s services, citing concerns over her social media activity, which included liking posts related to the Israel-Hamas conflict and expressing support for Palestine. The school stated that this action was taken to uphold its commitment to unity and inclusivity.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the school emphasized that the principal’s online actions did not align with the institution’s values. Following careful consideration, the management decided to end its association with Parveen Shaikh.

While acknowledging the importance of freedom of expression, the school stressed the need for responsibility when exercising this right.

In response, Shaikh condemned her termination as unjust and politically motivated. She asserted her exceptional performance as a school principal over the past 12 years and expressed her intention to explore legal options.

Shaikh, who served as principal for seven years, had been asked to provide a written clarification by the school management last week. However, it is not specified in the latest statement whether she responded to this request.
