Tesla Makes Grand Entrance into India with Mumbai Showroom Launch

Mumbai, 15th July 2025: In a landmark development for India’s electric vehicle (EV) sector, Tesla has officially opened its first showroom in the country, the Tesla Experience Centre, at Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The inauguration on Tuesday was led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who welcomed the American EV giant as a transformative force poised to redefine the nation’s mobility landscape.

The launch marks Tesla’s first formal presence in India, reflecting its commitment to entering the burgeoning Indian EV market. The company’s broader strategy includes setting up a comprehensive infrastructure framework encompassing logistics, service support, and large-scale EV charging facilities.

Located in one of Mumbai’s most prominent commercial zones, the Bandra Kurla Complex, the Experience Centre offers prospective buyers an immersive insight into Tesla’s technology and innovation. Designed with a clean, white-themed aesthetic in line with Tesla’s global brand identity, the showroom also incorporates elements of Indian culture through curated visuals. The design and execution were overseen by Neeta Sharada, Chief Architect for Tesla’s Indian operations, who revealed that the project was completed within an impressive 45-day timeframe. She noted that the space’s minimalist visual language was deliberately crafted to embody Tesla’s values of simplicity and innovation.

Chief Minister Fadnavis, who officiated the opening, described Tesla’s arrival as perfectly timed and well-placed, calling Maharashtra “the right state” for the company’s Indian debut. He highlighted the state’s leadership in electric mobility and assured Tesla of complete government support, positioning the partnership as a long-term collaboration for advancing sustainable transportation.

Beyond just a showroom, Tesla is laying the groundwork for a full-fledged operational ecosystem. This includes establishing a logistical and service network and setting up four major EV charging stations across Mumbai. These infrastructure plans are intended to ensure that Tesla can provide seamless end-to-end support for its customers in India.

The Mumbai showroom also serves as the launchpad for Tesla’s Model Y, a premium electric SUV that will now be available to Indian consumers. This strategic move is expected to gauge customer interest and determine the viability of broader product offerings in the premium EV segment.

India’s evolving EV landscape, especially in states like Maharashtra, presents significant opportunities for global players. Tesla’s entry is anticipated to influence the direction of the Indian market by pushing innovation and elevating competition. Lower import duties and incentives under the revised EV policy, along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ongoing engagement with Tesla CEO Elon Musk, including recent personal and telephonic discussions, underscore the Centre’s interest in encouraging global technological investments.

Tesla has already begun building its team in India, recruiting personnel for local operations earlier this year, a clear signal that the groundwork for a sustained presence is well underway.

The company’s entry into India is expected to accelerate EV adoption in the premium market and inspire broader advancements in infrastructure and product development. Tesla’s expansion could act as a catalyst, not just for consumers, but for the entire Indian EV ecosystem.
