Thane District Faces Severe Flooding After Heavy Rains; Rescue Operations Underway

Thane, 26th July 2024: Heavy rains hit most areas of the Thane district on Thursday, resulting in significant flooding and triggering rescue operations in Ambernath and other affected regions. The district recorded 138 mm of rain between 8 am and 1 pm, bringing the season’s total to 1,424 mm, according to a civic official.

In Ambernath, 18 elderly residents from the Sahavas old age home were moved to the upper floors of a different facility in Maher, while 30 children and staff from the Satkarma Ashram were relocated to Pragati Andha Vidyalaya. Additionally, 200 individuals were evacuated to the BSUP building. In Kalyan, 40 families, totalling 156 people, were also relocated as a precaution.

Water levels surpassed danger thresholds at the Badlapur Barrage, Jambul Dam, Mohane Dam, and the Ulhas River in Kalyan. The villages of Mohane, Varap, Valdhuni, Kalyan, Ane, Bhisol, Rayte, Apti, Dahagaon, and Manjarli in Kalyan taluka; Ambernath, Badlapur, Eranjad, Kudsavre, Kanhere, and Kasgaon in Ambernath taluka; Shahad, Ulhasnagar, and Mharal in Ulhasnagar taluka; and Dive Agar and Rajnoli in Bhiwandi taluka are anticipated to be impacted by the flooding.

Villages near the Tansa dam have been placed on high alert as the dam’s water level reached 99.18% capacity. Additionally, five houses, including two kutcha houses, were reported damaged in Bhiwandi and Shahapur talukas.

In Kalyan taluka, traffic has been suspended on the Runde and Rayte bridges due to overflow, and villagers along the riverbanks have been alerted for safety. The Kalyan-Murbad and Murbad-Sahapur roads have been closed because of submerged bridges. The Murbad-Shahapur road was also closed after the Chikli bridge was inundated.

Two NDRF teams have been dispatched to Thane district to support rescue and relief operations.
