Thane MACT Awards Rs 6.35 Lakh Compensation to Girl Injured in 2017 Road Accident

Thane, 7th December 2024: A Thane Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) in Maharashtra has awarded a compensation of Rs 6.35 lakh to a girl who sustained severe injuries in a road accident in 2017. The victim, Shweta Anilkumar Nishad, was five years old when the incident occurred. On May 15, 2017, she was crossing Mira Road with her mother when a jeep struck her. She was initially taken to a local hospital and later transferred to Mumbai for further treatment. She continues to receive medical care. The tribunal noted that the accident caused permanent partial disability to the victim and based its compensation decision on medical expenses, mental suffering, and other factors.
In a separate case earlier this week, the MACT awarded a total compensation of Rs 30.5 lakh to the families of two individuals killed in an accident on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway in 2020. The victims were travelling in an auto rickshaw from Chinchoti Vasai to Bhayander when it collided with a truck that was improperly parked on the road. The families of the victims filed petitions seeking compensation from the truck’s owners. On November 29, MACT Chairman S B Agrawal determined the truck driver was at fault and ordered the truck owners and their insurer to pay compensation with 7.5% interest from the date of the claim filing.
In the first petition, a compensation of Rs 13.66 lakh was awarded to Sandip Markandey Chavan’s family, while in the second petition, Rs 16.90 lakh was granted to Mukesh’s family. The compensation amounts were calculated based on the victims’ monthly incomes at the time of their deaths.
