Reported By Shruti Sneha
Mumbai, 26th November 2024: It’s been 16 years since the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks – a day seared into the collective memory of India. On November 26, 2008, ten heavily armed terrorists from the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba entered Mumbai via sea and started wreaking havoc at multiple iconic locations, including the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Oberoi Trident Hotel, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), Leopold Cafe, Nariman House, Cama Hospital, and Metro Cinema.
The attacks continued for almost four days, killing 166 people, injuring more than 300, and many more in terms of injuries – psychological, mental, emotional, that forever left a scar on them.
Even though the pain and anguish is felt so strongly, this day marks extraordinary courage and fortitude. While paying respect to the innocent lives lost and the acts of valor performed by the heroes who rose to the occasion, we respect the spirit of Mumbai and its people that would not give in to terror.
A Nation Pays Tribute
Leaders and citizens honored martyrs and victims of the 26/11 attacks today. Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar paid their floral tributes at the Police Commissioner Office in Mumbai. President Droupadi Murmu stressed solidarity with the families of the victims and saluted the brave security personnel. Union Home Minister Amit Shah reminded one and all of India’s zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism but the country will not shy away from dealing with such a threat.
Lessons of Resilience and Unity
A dark chapter in India’s history, the 26/11 Mumbai attacks also disclosed the strength and unity of its people, as the stories of heroism are testimony to the indomitable human spirit – from the security forces risking everything to civilians who demonstrated extraordinary courage. Honoring the sacrifices made and reaffirming our commitment to stand united against terrorism, we remember this day.
Sixteen years later, the memory of 26/11 still casts a stark reminder of the price of peace and the resilience required to safeguard it. The heroes of that fateful day live inside us, guiding us with their courage and selflessness.
