Mumbai Coastal Road Operational Timings Announced: Weekday Access for Commuters

Mumbai, 13th March 2024: In a noteworthy update for Mumbai’s daily commuters, the Mumbai Traffic Police disclosed the operational schedule on Tuesday for the recently opened Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Marg, commonly referred to as the Coastal Road. The inaugural phase witnessed the debut of the iconic red Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) electric buses, connecting Worli to Marine Drive on March 11.
The operational schedule for the Mumbai Coastal Road is as follows:
– Weekday access is permitted from Monday to Friday, operating between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm.
– Closure on Saturdays and Sundays is slated for maintenance purposes.
Specific junction hours include:
– Bindu Madhav Junction road in Worli opens at 8 am and closes at 5 pm due to the heightened traffic volume on the northbound carriageway.
– Lotus Junction in Worli is accessible from 8 am to 8 pm.
– Amarsons (Tata Garden) welcomes commuters from 8 am to 8 pm.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde conveyed that the completion of the second phase of the Mumbai Coastal Road project is expected by May 2024. The comprehensive 53-km-long initiative, initiated on October 13, 2018, will link the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, extending up to Dahisar.
The southbound carriageway from Worli to Marine Drive is poised to significantly truncate travel time from 40 minutes to a mere 9 minutes. Additionally, the Coastal Road is anticipated to yield an annual saving of almost $100 million in carbon emissions through enhanced fuel efficiency, as highlighted by BMC civic chief Iqbal Singh Chahal.
The Mumbai Coastal Road will boast a 2 km-long twin tunnel between Priyadarshini Park and Marine Drive, each accommodating three lanes. The remaining expanse of the road will feature four lanes on each carriageway. Upon full completion, the project aims to curtail travel time between Nariman Point in South Mumbai and Kandivali in the suburbs from over 2 hours to less than 40 minutes. It is noteworthy that the four-lane Coastal Road stands as a groundbreaking initiative in India, entirely constructed on reclaimed land from the sea and supported by monopiles exclusively.
