Navi Mumbai: Concerns Rise Over Illegal Temple Structures on Parsik Hills in Belapur, Cidco Initiates Investigation

Navi Mumbai, 20th March 2024: CIDCO has identified a total of 19 illegal temple structures along the Parsik Hills at the Belapur node, prompting concerns about potential landslides endangering nearby residential buildings. NatConnect Foundation raised the alarm in a complaint to the Chief Minister, who directed the Urban Development Department to investigate.

The proliferation of these structures, initially starting with just one or two temples, has now expanded to about 20, as reported by residents. Despite a landslide incident in 2016, CIDCO allegedly neglected these structures encroaching on the hillsides.

Suresh Mengade, CIDCO’s chief vigilance officer, has confirmed that the issue is under investigation by a special committee within the planning department. B N Kumar, director of NatConnect Foundation, has communicated with CIDCO’s managing director Kailash Shinde, emphasizing the potential dangers posed by these encroachments.

The NatConnect director also recalled previous assurances from CIDCO officials dating back to 2015, indicating a lack of progress in addressing the issue over the years. While emphasizing respect for religious sentiments, Kumar stressed the need for legal processes for temple construction.

Residents of Kalpataru society, directly impacted by the encroachments and resulting noise pollution, have been engaged in ongoing correspondence with CIDCO. Despite their efforts, they express frustration over the lack of tangible outcomes.

Activists have further highlighted the disturbance caused by loud music from these religious places, impacting students studying for exams and patients in nearby residences. Complaints have been lodged with the police, with assurances of action provided by Belapur senior Police Inspector Gore.

To address these concerns collectively, residents and activists have formed a forum named “Save Belapur Hills” and recently convened a meeting to garner support and strategize further actions.
