Mumbai Gears Up: Over 24,000 Police Officers Deployed for Ganpati Immersion Processions
Mumbai, 16th September 2024: Over 24,000 police officers will be stationed across Mumbai for the immersion processions on Anant Chaturdashi, marking the conclusion of the Ganpati festival, scheduled for Tuesday. An official announced this deployment on Monday.
Drone surveillance will oversee major immersion sites such as Girgaon Chowpatty, Dadar, Bandra, Juhu, Versova, Powai Lake, and Madh Island. The force includes nine additional commissioners, 40 deputy commissioners, and 56 assistant commissioners of police to ensure comprehensive coverage and prevent incidents.
To manage anticipated heavy traffic and facilitate smooth vehicle movement, particularly for emergency services, a ‘green corridor’ will be established. The Coastal Road will be accessible 24 hours to alleviate congestion.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Satyanarayan Choudhary highlighted that the city police are on high alert. Support will come from various units, including the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), Quick Response Teams (QRT), Riot Control Police (RCP), Delta forces, combat teams, home guards, and the Maharashtra Security Force.
Security measures will be bolstered by over 8,000 CCTV cameras, focusing on the safety of women and children in crowded areas. This heightened security will also extend to the Eid-E-Milad procession on Wednesday.
To ensure traffic efficiency, more than 2,500 traffic police will be on duty, with traffic restrictions, one-way routes, and diversions implemented on certain roads. Advisories have been issued to Ganesh mandals to avoid old, potentially dangerous railway bridges.
The police are collaborating with the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) to ensure local trains operate throughout the night on immersion day. Residents are advised to stay alert, avoid spreading rumors, and contact the police in emergencies.
