Heavy Rains and Thunderstorms Batter Mumbai Suburbs as Monsoon Activity Intensifies

Mumbai, 24th September 2024: Thunderstorms and heavy rains swept through the city suburbs early Tuesday morning. Moderate to intense showers, accompanied by thunder and strong winds, hit the area yesterday. Cloudy skies persisted, and the city experienced steady rainfall throughout the morning. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), cloudy conditions will continue, with heavy downpours expected later in the day.
The city’s minimum temperature was recorded at 25°C, with the maximum expected to reach 31°C. Average temperatures are predicted to remain around 28.5°C. Northeasterly winds at 1.9 km/h are forecasted. The sun rose at 6:28 am, and sunset is projected for 6:33 pm.
In the coming days, the IMD forecasts a drop in minimum temperatures to 22°C on Wednesday, rising slightly to 23°C on Thursday. Moderate to heavy rain is expected to persist, bringing cooler weather. Minimum temperatures are predicted to fluctuate between 22°C and 26°C, while maximum temperatures will range between 28°C and 32°C.
After a short warm spell, temperatures across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) are set to fall again. As monsoon activity intensifies in the MMR, Mumbai and its nearby areas are likely to witness more moderate to heavy rainfall. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for coastal Maharashtra.
Air quality in Mumbai remains satisfactory. SAFAR-India recorded a PM10 Air Quality Index (AQI) of 56. An AQI between zero and 50 is classified as good, while values from 51 to 100 are considered satisfactory. An AQI of 101 to 200 is moderate, indicating the need for precaution.
