Mumbai: Senior Citizen Loses Rs 1 Lakh to Cybercriminals in Mobile Recharge Scam

Santa Cruz, 30th July 2023: An unfortunate incident has come to light where an 80-year-old retired bank manager fell victim to cybercriminals who looted Rs 1 lakh from his bank account through fraudulent mobile recharges. The Vakola police are currently investigating the matter to apprehend the culprits behind this scam.
The complainant, an elderly individual from Santa Cruz, reported that he was cheated by cyber crooks who convinced him to download certain mobile applications. On July 25, the victim attempted an online mobile recharge of Rs. 155, but the amount was deducted from his bank account without completing the recharge. He promptly lodged a complaint via email with the mobile company regarding the failed transaction.
In response to his complaint, the mobile company contacted the complainant, instructing him to visit the bank to inquire about the transfer of funds from his account. Upon checking with the bank, it was confirmed that Rs. 155 had indeed been transferred.
On July 28, the victim received a call from a person claiming to be Rahul from the bank’s service center. The caller assured the victim that the Rs. 155 would be refunded. Taking advantage of the situation, the fraudster then persuaded the elderly man to download a mobile application.
Unfortunately, during this process, the accused obtained the victim’s CVV number, leading to unauthorized transactions totaling Rs 1.02 lakh from his bank account.
