Mumbai: Container Overturns In Khandala Tunnel On Mumbai-Pune Expressway; Two People Injured

Khandala, 2nd August 2023: A large container overturned today in the Khandala Tunnel on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway, injuring two people in the accident. The sudden overturn of the large container in the Khandala tunnel brought the entire traffic heading towards Mumbai to a standstill.

The accident, which occurred at approximately 11:15 a.m., left two people severely injured, sparking a massive response from the authorities. Due to this, the passengers going from Pune to Mumbai have been instructed to take light vehicles to Mumbai on the old Mumbai-Pune National Highway until the overturned container is removed.

Thankfully, there were no reported fatalities in the accident. As soon as news of the incident was received, personnel from Khandala Highway and Lonavala City Police, the Devdoot Emergency Team, and the IRB swiftly reached the spot to assess the situation and initiate necessary rescue and recovery efforts.

In the aftermath of the accident, the traffic flow from Pune to Mumbai has been heavily impacted, forcing the authorities to take immediate action. Passengers travelling from Pune to Mumbai have been advised to take the old Mumbai-Pune National Highway route until the overturned container is safely removed and the main expressway is fully reopened.

To ease the traffic congestion towards Mumbai, the Highway Police have implemented a diversion from Valvan in Lonavala to the old Mumbai-Pune National Highway, guiding vehicles away from the affected area on the expressway.
