Mumbai: Tragic Drowning Incident Mars Ganesh Immersion in Karjat, One Dead and Two Missing

Mumbai, 29th September 2023: A somber cloud hangs over the Ganesh Visarjan celebrations in Karjat as news broke out about a tragic drowning incident in the Ulhas River at Chandhai. Four individuals were reported to have drowned during the immersion ceremony. One has been confirmed dead, another rescued, and two are still missing.
As the 10-day Ganesh festival reached its climax with the immersion ceremony, citizens flocked to the Ulhas River in large numbers. Four individuals—Chetan Sonwane, Yash Sahu, Jagdish Sahu, and Rohan Ranjan Jena (age 12)—drowned near the Ulhas River bridge in Chandhai. Rohan’s father managed to rescue him, but the other three went missing. Yash Sahu was later found but was declared dead upon arrival at Karjat Upazila Hospital.
Rescue teams worked tirelessly until 9 PM to locate the missing individuals. However, due to darkness and the river’s strong currents, the search was called off for the night. The operation is set to resume the following morning.
Karjat Taluk Tehsildar Dr. Sheetal Rasal, Police Sub-Divisional Officer Vijay Lagare, and other officials visited the site to gather information and console the families affected by this unfortunate incident. Karjat police have been informed and are coordinating the search efforts.
In light of the incident, authorities are urging the public to exercise extreme caution during Ganpati immersion activities. The administration is appealing to the public to be vigilant, especially when entering bodies of water.
