Mumbai: Foreign Woman Arrested For Smuggling 3.5 Kilos Of Gold At Mumbai Airport

Mumbai, 2nd october 2023: In a special operation at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, the Customs Department apprehended a foreign national on Saturday for attempting to smuggle a significant quantity of gold jewelry. The suspect, identified as Sahra Mohammad Omar, a 40-year-old Kenyan citizen, arrived in India using a United Kingdom (UK) passport from Nairobi, Kenya.

Authorities grew suspicious of Omar during routine checks, leading to a thorough inspection. To their astonishment, they discovered a concealed stash of gold in her undergarments. Subsequent investigation revealed that she was carrying a total of 17 gold bars, weighing a substantial 3,465 grams, with an estimated value of Rs 1 crore 64 lakh.

The seized gold is 22 carats, while the jewellery she wore was 21 carats. All the confiscated gold has been seized by the customs department and taken into their possession.

Under the provisions of the Customs Act, a case has been registered against the accused, who now faces legal action for her smuggling attempt.
