Affordable Housing in Pune: PMC to Offer Tenancy-Based Flats in Baner to Needy Citizens

Pune, 8th March 2024: Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is gearing up to construct flats in the Baner area, offering them on a tenancy basis to those in need, aligning with the broader goal of providing affordable housing through the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana within the city.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, PMC has established a total of 5 projects on reserved land in Hadapsar, Vadgaon Khurd and Kharadi, resulting in the completion of 2,658 flats. Beneficiaries for these flats were selected through an online lottery system, followed on a first-come, first-served basis. PMC has already distributed some of these flats, and the remaining units will be made available through tenancy agreements, providing housing solutions for the city’s needy citizens.

Given the substantial influx of people to Pune for employment and education, with six to seven lakh citizens arriving annually, the demand for housing has surged. The escalating costs of purchasing a home have posed challenges for some residents. In response to this, the new plan in Baner is in its early stages, with a focus on studying available land and determining the number of flats to be constructed before implementation. This initiative aims to address the housing needs of citizens facing difficulties in acquiring their own homes.
