BITS Pilani Launches BITS Design School in Mumbai, Unveils Four-Year Bachelor of Design Program

Mumbai, 16th February 2024: On February 15, the Birla Institute of Technology And Science (BITS) Pilani announced the establishment of BITS Design School (BITSDES) in Mumbai, marking a significant expansion of its academic offerings. The newly launched design school is set to introduce a four-year residential Bachelor of Design (Honours) program, slated to commence in the academic year 2024-25. Plans for a Master’s degree program and a faculty development initiative for design educators are also in the pipeline over the next two years.

Admissions for the inaugural class of BITS Design School are scheduled to begin on February 26, 2024. The curriculum, delivered by a blend of international visiting faculty and distinguished Indian faculty trained at top global design schools, will offer students the opportunity to specialize in one of five streams in the second year of the program: Physical Product Design, Digital Product Design (UI/UX), Human-Centered Design, Experience Design, and Visual Design.

BITS Design School aims to equip graduates with transdisciplinary competencies, positioning them for leadership roles in various sectors, including C-Suite positions. The institution is committed to promoting diversity within the student cohort by offering generous scholarships to meritorious students.

The curriculum of BITS Design School will be co-designed and annually reviewed by Aalto University, Finland, a global leader in Art and Design, ranked sixth according to QS Rankings. The school will be situated in a world-class fully residential campus spanning 63 acres in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, alongside BITS School of Management and BITS Law School.

Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chancellor of BITS Pilani, underscored the importance of design in addressing contemporary complexities across diverse sectors. He emphasized BITS Design School’s commitment to reimagining design education with a bold, transdisciplinary, competency-based approach, aiming to cultivate a new generation of leaders capable of leveraging design for positive impact in various domains.
