Can We Get Back Our Little Friend “The Sparrow” Which Are Nearing Extinction?

Pune, 7th March 2024: Does everyone remember the “sparrow”? The little buff, black and brown stripped bird also called the house sparrow that lived with and around us and had its eternal presence around humans! Where has this little friend of ours vanished today?

The last I remember having seen this bird is about 8 to 10 years ago. Yet, whenever we go to some wilderness where nature is at its best, this little bird becomes visible again. It’s mere presence brings back the lovely childhood memories of the musical chirping of these little ones which would act like an alarm clock for many. These sparrows where truly part of us and suddenly we see their absence in our lives. The little music they created seems to have muted.

And that’s a truly disturbing phenomenon. The question now arises, what is the reason for these sparrows to have gone away and will they ever come back specially to our cities? Well, a thorough research on this made us, Aarambh Foundation, a section 8 company working for saving sparrows conclude that the increasing pollution and the massive construction activities have taken away a conducive habitat for these sparrows. They are unable to find relevant spaces to nest and breed in today’s vast expanding concrete jungles. So, Aarambh Foundation started working more seriously on designing a right shelter for these sparrows since its inception in year 2012.

Today, Aarambh Foundation has developed a scientific and beautiful nest kit for these little birds. Each kit contains a nice nesting house, a feeder and a water pot which can be installed in our houses either in the terraces or the gardens. This nest house should be installed in such a position where there is no harsh sunlight and is safe from other larger birds’ or animals’ reach. Thus, when installed in an apt location these nest houses with grains in the feeder and clean water in the water pot attract the sparrows and eventually they start nesting in it. Isn’t this then a beautiful initiative to conserve our little birds and thereby the environment in its entirety. Such nests have been installed by many supporters of Aarambh Foundation.

Aarambh Foundation’s Founder Umesh Pawar always believes that saving sparrows has a larger impact on conserving our beautiful environment. He has been actively promoting this initiative and has also been able to get support from various eminent and renowned personalities from the construction world and Marathi film industry. Every year Aarambh Foundation very happily celebrates “World Sparrow Day” on 20th March.

This event is adorned with various programs and attract many people at the venue.
