Central Railway Marks World Environment Day with ‘Go Green’ Initiative, Tree Plantation, and Anti-Plastic Drive

Mumbai, 05th June 2025: Central Railway observed World Environment Day with a series of environmental initiatives including the launch of the ‘Go Green’ campaign, a pledge ceremony, tree plantation drive, exhibition on sustainable alternatives, and awareness rallies across major locations.
The Environment Pledge was administered at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) Hall, where General Manager Dharam Veer Meena, along with Principal Heads of Departments (PHODs), officers, and staff of the headquarters participated. The pledge was conducted via video conference by the Member Traction and Rolling Stock (MTRS), Railway Board.
In his address, General Manager Dharam Veer Meena emphasized the ecological importance of native tree species such as Banyan and Peepal, and encouraged railway personnel to adopt sustainable practices in their daily routines.
A mass tree plantation drive followed the ceremony, where 100 saplings were planted. Central Railway has set a target to plant 500 saplings in the coming days as part of its broader environmental commitment.
An exhibition on eco-friendly alternatives to plastic was also inaugurated by the General Manager. The exhibit featured edible cutlery made from pulses, samples of different plastic types, and educational material on plastic pollution and its impact. The exhibit aimed to support the 2025 global theme, “End Plastic Pollution.”
Awareness rallies were held at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and CSMT station, with participation from railway staff, Bharat Scouts & Guides, and the Civil Defence team. Passengers and onlookers were engaged and sensitised about environmental conservation and encouraged to adopt sustainable living practices.
The observance reflects Central Railway’s continued efforts to promote environmental stewardship through public outreach, community involvement, and internal green initiatives.
