COVID-19 Cases Rise in Mumbai, Chennai, Ahmedabad Amid Regional Surge in Asia

Mumbai, 24th May 2025: Health officials are closely tracking a recent spike in COVID-19 cases across several Indian cities, even as overall national numbers remain relatively low. The resurgence comes amid a regional uptick in infections in parts of Asia, including Hong Kong and Singapore.

Mumbai has emerged as a hotspot, reporting 95 Covid-19 cases in May alone, a sharp increase when compared to Maharashtra’s total of 106 cases recorded since January. At least 16 patients are currently hospitalised. Authorities have begun transferring patients from KEM Hospital to Seven Hills Hospital as a precautionary measure to curb transmission.

Similar upward trends have been noted in Chennai and Ahmedabad, raising concerns about potential localised outbreaks.

Health departments have stepped up testing, with all individuals showing symptoms of influenza-like illness (ILI) or severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) being screened for COVID-19.

Authorities are urging continued vigilance, especially in densely populated urban areas, to prevent the situation from escalating further.
