Dengue And Malaria outbreaks In Navi Mumbai’s Uran Taluka Raise Alarm

Navi Mumbai, 10th July 2023: Navi Mumbai’s Uran Taluka is grappling with a growing concern over the outbreak of dengue and malaria cases. In recent weeks, six cases of these life-threatening diseases have been reported in the taluka, prompting health officials from the municipality to issue a warning to citizens, urging them to take appropriate preventive measures.
According to experts, escalating pollution levels caused by garbage accumulation and stagnant water in Uran and the effects of climate change are the root causes behind these life-threatening problems. This combination has led to a surge in mosquito infestations, resulting in a rising number of cases of malaria and dengue in the Taluka. The prolonged spell of hot and rainy weather has further exacerbated the problem, as rainwater accumulates in low-lying and sheltered areas, providing ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Apart from that, the frequent disruptions in electricity supply during the night have worsened the mosquito infestation problem for the citizens. The lack of a consistent power supply hampers the use of electronic mosquito repellent devices and other preventive measures,
leaving the residents vulnerable to mosquito bites.
The health department of Uran has already begun implementing measures to tackle the situation. Currently, they are conducting spraying
activities throughout the rainy season to control the mosquito population. However, in light of the increasing number of dengue and malaria cases, the citizens are demanding an intensified larvicide spraying campaign to effectively reduce mosquito infestation in the villages.
Meanwhile, Uran Taluka’s health officer, Dr. Rajendra Itkare, has advised the local village panchayat and residents to take the initiative to clean their area and seek immediate treatment if any symptoms of infectious diseases are detected.
