High Security Number Plates Mandatory for Vehicles Registered Before April 2019 in Maharashtra

Mumbai, 27 February 2025: The installation of High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) has been made mandatory for all vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, as per the Supreme Court’s directive and the Central Motor Rules 1989. While vehicles registered after April 1, 2019, already come with HSRP, older vehicles are now required to comply with this regulation.
Implementation Process in Maharashtra
In Maharashtra, the tender process for HSRP installation on pre-2019 registered vehicles has been completed. The High Power Committee has finalized the rates from three companies, and the Transport Commissioner’s Office has issued orders for the commencement of the installation process.
Standardized Pricing and Availability
The HSRP charges in Maharashtra include both the number plate cost and fitment charges. In contrast, some states have separate rates for number plates and installation. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) website provides details regarding the approved rates in different states, according to Joint Transport Commissioner.
Nationwide Implementation
The process of installing HSRP on older vehicles is currently underway in multiple states across the country. The new plates are aimed at enhancing vehicle security, preventing counterfeiting, and ensuring compliance with national regulations.
