Indian Government’s Ambitious Plan to Make Mumbai Slum-Free Under Piyush Goyal’s Leadership

Mumbai, 31st March 2024: The Indian government, under the leadership of Piyush Goyal, is actively pursuing the ambitious goal of transforming Mumbai into a slum-free city. Recognizing the inherent dignity and self-respect that every individual deserves, Goyal emphasized the importance of finding holistic solutions that cater to the needs of all segments of society, including the poor, middle-class, and affluent citizens.

One innovative approach being explored is the utilization of salt pan land parcels for public housing or rehabilitation purposes, particularly those areas not currently utilized for salt production. With approximately 60,000 acres of such land available across the country, this presents a significant opportunity to address the housing needs of urban populations.

Goyal highlighted the importance of thorough evaluation and adherence to due process in considering proposals for the redevelopment of salt pan land, taking into account technical and ecological considerations.

In line with these efforts, the government has already initiated the redevelopment of Dharavi, Asia’s largest slum, located on prime land in Mumbai. Adani Properties secured the rights for the redevelopment project, with the Ministry of Railways approving the allotment of a 45-acre plot adjacent to Dharavi for this purpose. Dharavi, with its staggering population density, represents both a challenge and an opportunity to create a vibrant and sustainable urban community.

Beyond addressing housing challenges, the government is also focusing on enhancing healthcare infrastructure, with plans to establish a super multi-speciality hospital in north Mumbai. This comprehensive approach underscores the government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for all residents of Mumbai, ensuring access to essential services and opportunities for growth and development.
