Kalicharan was Sent to 14-day judicial custody for Making Controversial Remarks on Mahatma Gandhi

Thane, 21st January 2022: On Friday, Hindu religious leader, Kalicharan was sent to 14-day judicial custody by a court in Thane, Maharashtra due to his “objectionable” remarks against Mahatma Gandhi.

The police of Naupada police station in Thane district had arrested Kalicharan from Raipur, Chhattisgarh, where he was lodged in a similar case in jail. He was brought on transit remand on Thursday evening and was produced before the court on Friday morning. Thane Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) SV Metil Patil sent Kalicharan to judicial custody. At the time of his production before the court, heavy deployment of the police force was arranged in the court premises.

The Naupada police station has filed an FIR against Kalicharan on the basis of a complaint made by Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and Maharashtra government minister Jitendra Awhad for his alleged controversial remarks. It is notable that an FIR has been lodged against him in many parts of Maharashtra for allegedly making demeaning remarks against Mahatma Gandhi at an event held in Raipur on December 26 last year.

The Raipur Police had arrested Kalicharan for his alleged derogatory remarks against Mahatma Gandhi. On January 12 this year, the Wardha Police of Maharashtra had also arrested Kalicharan on the basis of an FIR registered for the same. An FIR has also been lodged against Kalicharan in the Akola district of Maharashtra.
