Maharashtra Cabinet Panel Greenlights Rs 22,000 Crore Metro Project Connecting Mumbai and Navi Mumbai Airports

Mumbai, 27th January 2026: The Maharashtra government has approved a Rs 22,000 crore metro project aimed at drastically reducing travel time between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and Navi Mumbai International Airport. The decision was taken by a Cabinet sub-committee chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, during a meeting that also reviewed several other key infrastructure initiatives across the state.

The planned Metro Line 8 will cover 33.5 kilometers, comprising 9.25 km underground and 24 km elevated sections, with a total of 20 stations — six underground and fourteen elevated. The line will link Terminal 3 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Airport to Terminal 2 at Navi Mumbai International Airport, with stations spaced an average of 1.9 km apart. The project will involve 30.7 hectares of land acquisition, costing an estimated ₹388 crore. CM Fadnavis instructed authorities to complete all necessary approvals and land acquisition within six months, with the metro slated for completion within three years.

In addition to the airport metro, the panel approved several other major projects:

Expansion of the Samruddhi Mahamarg on the Nagpur–Gondia and Bhandara–Gadchiroli sections, with strict emphasis on timely completion.

Nashik City Ring Road, spanning 66.15 km at a cost of ₹3,954 crore, aimed at improving connectivity ahead of the Kumbh Mela.

Upgradation of mineral transport highways in Gadchiroli district, including the Navegaon–More, Konsari, Mulchera, Hedri, and Surjagad routes, totaling 85.76 km of four-lane cement concrete roads.

CM Fadnavis stressed that all infrastructure projects must adhere to set timelines, emphasizing the need for prompt execution to keep pace with Maharashtra’s rapid urbanization.
