Maharashtra Government Plans Permanent Detention Center in Navi Mumbai for Foreign Nationals

Navi Mumbai, 6th July 2024: On Friday, the Maharashtra government sanctioned a proposal to establish a permanent detention centre in Navi Mumbai for foreign nationals who have exceeded their stay in India. The decision was made during a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, as confirmed by an official statement. The permanent facility will be constructed in Balegaon, Navi Mumbai, while a temporary detention centre will be set up at Bhoiwada Central Jail in Mumbai, accommodating 213 and 80 individuals respectively.
According to the official, the necessity for these centres arises because many foreign nationals, upon completing their prison terms for overstaying their visa limits, encounter difficulties returning to their home countries immediately due to various reasons.
In addition to this decision, the cabinet also approved financial support for milk producers in the state, offering Rs 5 per litre for milk exports and Rs 30 per kilogram for milk powder exports. Furthermore, they endorsed the ‘Anandacha Shidha’ package ahead of the Ganesh festival, providing ration card holders with essential items such as one kilogram each of rawa, sugar, lentils, and edible oil. Additionally, the cabinet greenlit the tourism policy for 2024.
