Massive Turnout at Air India Handyman Job Fair in Kalina, Mumbai

Mumbai, 17th July 2024: On Tuesday, Mumbai’s Kalina witnessed an overwhelming turnout of job seekers exceeding 25,000 who arrived for a walk-in interview at Air India Airport Services Ltd. The company had advertised 2,216 vacancies for the position of handyman, a role involving a variety of repair and maintenance responsibilities.

Despite the limited number of positions available, the recruitment office was inundated with a large crowd, leading to chaotic scenes. Eventually, organizers advised applicants to submit their resumes and leave, deferring further processing to a later stage.

The handyman position, despite its physical demands such as heavy lifting and operational tasks, offers a monthly salary ranging from ₹20,000 to ₹25,000, with potential for additional earnings through overtime allowances that could exceed ₹30,000. Educational requirements are minimal, focusing more on physical fitness and preparedness for strenuous duties.

George Abram, the general secretary of the Aviation Industry Employees Guild, expressed dissatisfaction with the recruitment process, noting, “Many individuals arrived expecting thousands of vacancies. They even brought demand drafts, but we instructed them not to make any payments and assured them of future communication.”

The incident underscores the fierce competition for employment opportunities and raises concerns about the management of large-scale recruitment events. Despite the challenges faced, organizers have committed to thoroughly reviewing all submitted resumes and contacting eligible candidates for the next steps in the hiring process.
