MMRDA Sets Up Emergency Control Room to Tackle Monsoon Challenges in Mumbai

Mumbai, 31st May 2023: Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) gears up for the upcoming monsoon season by establishing its annual Emergency Control Room. From June 1 to September 30, the control room will address issues arising during the rainy season at MMRDA project sites and surrounding areas.

MMRDA is actively working on various infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing Mumbai and its metropolitan region. These projects include the Metro, Mumbai Transharbour Project, Santacruz-Chembur Expressway Extension Project, Airoli-Katai Naka Expressway, subways, Sewri-Worli Elevated Line, Cheda Nagar Junction Improvement Project, and the extended MUIP in Mumbai Metropolitan Region, encompassing roads, bridges, and flyovers. However, these projects often face challenges during the monsoon season, such as water accumulation, tree falls, traffic congestion, and accidents.

To mitigate these risks and provide immediate assistance, the MMRDA establishes the Emergency Control Room each year. This control room operates 24/7 and collaborates with disaster control rooms of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, Public Works Department, Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation, and Railways. It ensures that complaints are promptly addressed and information is exchanged to effectively address citizens’ concerns. The control room operates in three shifts, with dedicated officers and staff.

MMRDA has also issued strict instructions to contractors involved in the projects to adhere to safety regulations. These instructions include setting up road barricades at project sites, repairing damaged roads, and promptly clearing accumulated mud from the roads. Contractors have also been directed to install additional capacity water pumping pumps in areas without sewage drainage to prevent rainwater accumulation.

Citizens can reach out to the control room for assistance during emergencies by contacting the provided telephone numbers: 022-26591241, 022-26594176, mobile numbers 8657402090, and the toll-free number 1800228801 starting from June 1, 2023.

The establishment of the Emergency Control Room by MMRDA showcases its commitment to ensuring the safety and smooth functioning of ongoing projects during the monsoon season. By addressing challenges promptly and coordinating with relevant authorities, MMRDA aims to provide a safer environment for both its projects and the citizens of Mumbai.
