Mumbai: Adani-Maharashtra Government Joint Venture Promises Larger Homes For Dharavi Residents

Dharavi, 18th January 2024: In a significant development, the Adani group, in partnership with the Maharashtra government, announced on Monday that eligible residents of Dharavi slum clusters will be offered new flats spanning 350 sq ft. Emphasizing a 17% increase in size compared to typical slum redevelopment projects, Adani highlighted the inclusion of a kitchen and toilet in the new accommodations. This initiative comes as part of the ongoing redevelopment efforts in Dharavi, with the Adani group aiming to enhance living conditions.

Previously, residents in informal settlements were allocated homes measuring 269 sq ft, and since 2018, the state government has increased the size to 315-322 sq ft. The revitalized area is set to feature amenities such as community halls, recreational spaces, public gardens, dispensaries, and daycare centers for children. Notably, the cut-off date for determining eligibility is January 1, 2000.

Residents deemed “ineligible” will still receive housing support under the proposed affordable rental housing policy, aligning with the state government’s guidelines. This comprehensive initiative reflects a concerted effort to address housing challenges and improve overall living standards in Dharavi.
