Mumbai Airport Customs Seizes Over 6.46 Kilograms of Gold in Recent Crackdown

Mumbai, 14th March 2024: In recent days, Mumbai Airport Customs has made significant seizures, totalling over 6.46 kilograms of gold valued at Rs 3.64 crore, along with various mobile phones and laptops across 12 separate cases.
The Customs department reported that in one instance, an Indian national arriving from Abu Dhabi to Mumbai was intercepted, leading to the discovery of 1700 grams (net) of gold dust concealed in the passenger’s clothing. Similarly, in another case, three passengers were found with 1020 grams (net) of gold dust in wax form.
In a third scenario, another Indian national arriving from Abu Dhabi was intercepted, with 600 grams (net) of gold dust hidden in clothing. Subsequently, an individual travelling from Bahrain to Mumbai was found with 530 grams (net) of gold jewellery and assorted items concealed in their handbag and on their person.
Further interceptions included the discovery of gold bars concealed in a passenger’s wallet, assorted gold jewellery and phones hidden in hand and check-in luggage, and expensive phones and laptops concealed in bags.
In one particularly notable case, specific intelligence led to the interception of an individual from Jeddah, resulting in the discovery of 1145 grams (net) of gold dust hidden in wax form in their rectum. Additionally, various forms of gold, including rhodium-plated gold coins and gold dust in cloth, were discovered concealed in passengers’ clothing and belongings.
These incidents highlight the vigilant efforts of Mumbai Airport Customs in combating smuggling activities and safeguarding against the illegal transportation of valuable goods into the country.
