Mumbai: BEST to Add 150 Double-Decker Electric Buses to Mumbai Fleet; Open-Deck Models Planned for Tourism
Mumbai, 20th August 2026: The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking is set to expand its fleet with 150 new air-conditioned double-decker electric buses. The proposal was unanimously approved at the BEST Committee meeting held on Wednesday, August 19.
The new buses will be fully electric, helping reduce both air and noise pollution while providing Mumbai commuters with a more comfortable mode of transport.
According to the plan, the buses will feature automatic doors on both sides, air-conditioned interiors and mobile charging points near passenger seats. CCTV cameras will also be installed across the buses to strengthen security for women and other passengers.
Open-deck buses for tourists
Some of the new double-decker electric buses are also expected to be introduced as open-deck buses for tourism in Mumbai. BEST Committee Chairperson Trishna Vishwasrao has suggested the inclusion of open-deck buses to offer tourists a different way to explore the city.
The move comes as BEST looks to expand its public transport network amid rising passenger demand. Work orders have already been issued to various bus suppliers, with more buses expected to be added to the fleet in the coming months.
Apart from the 150 double-decker electric buses, BEST is also planning to introduce a larger number of single-decker AC electric buses.
The expansion is expected to strengthen Mumbai’s public transport system and provide commuters with cleaner, quieter and more comfortable travel options.
